Miss A's Suzy in Grazia September 2014 & Idols who can model

Just as not every Korean idol can act, not every idol can model well. While that's okay, because that's not their career, it just makes it all the more impressive when an idol does model well. Of course, judgment is not passed with a single magazine or ad campaign photoshoot, because many factors go into it including the clothes themselves, the styling, the setting, the skill of the photographer, and the rapport between the photographer and the model. Yet, over time, one gets a sense for an idol's panache in front of a photo lens. Some idols that have thrived in their modeling work who readily come to my mind are Suzy Bae of Miss A, Sohee formerly of Wonder Girls, and possibly Yoona of SNSD. I'm sure there are many more, and I'll be sure to add more to my list as time goes on.

Suzy appears in GRAZIA's September 2014 issue with another great photo spread mostly styled in Rebecca Minkoff items.

As a current "it girl" of South Korea, Suzy has succeeded in more areas than music and modeling having acted in leading roles since 2011 in both the small screen (Dream High and Gu Family Book) and the big screen (Architecture 101). She's also a familiar face on many variety shows (Running Man, Invincible Youth Season 2), and is remarkably well spoken and composed as an MC/host in shows ranging from the smaller weekly music shows to the bigger annual award shows. I particularly enjoyed her MC'ing alongside Yoon Shi-yoon for the 2013 KBS Gayo Daechukje. Or maybe Yoon Shi-yoon just made it that much more enjoyable.

It's hard to not like her. Who else can hold her own opposite the queen Jeon Ji-hyun when she made her memorable cameo in 2014's hit drama, You Who Came from the Stars?

I say she models well relative to the average idol because she models interestingly while appearing so effortless. Most idols effuse an I'm-an-idol-therefore-I'm-pretty-period feeling, which I don't mind because they are so pretty (even the boys), but it gets boring. It makes me all the more happy and respect them more when they push to the next level and do something more or different in their photos.

This photo shoot in particular was a great one that showed off her natural beauty. She still has much of her girl-next-door image, but there's more sensuality and maturity mixed into, too, which is brought out poignantly in the autumn ambience. She actually addresses the same issue of maturing in the article as she just turned 21 years old, in addition to her singing and love for red lipstick.

Even though her activities with Miss A is currently on hiatus, she's been keeping busy: Suzy will appear opposite veteran actors Kim Nam-gil (Shark) and Ryu Seung-ryong in the sageuk/historical film Dorihwaga slated to be released in theaters next year 2015.
